Considering that after 15 days of marriage , the woman was allegedly subjected to abusive behaviour, humiliation, and criminal intimidation, and a specific allegation of demand for a Bullet motorcycle, cash of Rs 3 lakhs as dowry, the Orissa High Court recently dismissed the in-laws’ plea seeking to quash criminal proceedings in a dowry harassment and cruelty case. While dealing with a plea of in-laws and relatives, Justice Sanjeeb K Panigrahi noted that the inherent jurisdiction is to be exercised sparingly, with circumspection, and only in cases where continuation of the criminal proceeding would amount to abuse of the process of the court or where interference is necessary to secure the ends of justice. “Specific allegations have been made regarding the demand for a Bullet motorcycle, cash of Rs 3 lakhs, and other household articles.…
