Marketer here. Been out of a real corporate job since November 2025 (laid off). Got lucky enough to assist my dad in his small business in the meantime while I look for other opportunities.
I have a really good background in my field and It’s until now where nothing is fucking working. Referrals don’t even get me interviews. Seems like I’m either too experienced for some jobs or just a tad bit inexperienced for others.
Now out of desperation, I applied to a sales position at a growing tech startup company. I didn’t make it to the next round because…well the recruiter asked me to pitch the platform to someone who doesn’t know it.
And as a trained marketer I responded “well that’s a very broad question because I don’t know who I’m even talking to”. So I followed up with a very generic pitch of the product.
Am I dumb for thinking or saying that? There were many red flags with this role and company to begin with but i hate rejection and i feel like my comment wasn’t all that bad…
