Roundup: Palo Verde, Durango stave off elimination in 5A baseball playoffs

Palo Verde, the Mountain League’s No. 3 seed, defeated Shadow Ridge, the Sky League’s No. 4 seed, 9-5 in a Class 5A Southern Region baseball tournament elimination game Friday at Centennial. Palo Verde (25-8) advances to another elimination game at 1 p.m. Thursday at a to-be-determined site. The Panthers will play the loser of Bishop Gorman-Desert Oasis, which play in a winners bracket contest at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gorman. Palo Verde would have played Coronado in a Saturday elimination game. But earlier Friday, Coronado was pulled out of the playoffs for an unspecified reason by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association. Coronado had lost to Palo Verde 2-0 on Wednesday. The Cougars would have played the loser of Basic-Faith Lutheran in an elimination game Friday, but earlier Thursday the NIAA pulled Basic out of the playoffs after the Wolves used an ineligible player for the whole season. Coronado had advances to Saturday’s game before being pulled out early Friday. Shadow Ridge finishes 11-18.…
