My 9-year-old started messing around on my old trumpet about a week ago, and so far he has wildly surpassed my expectations. He can already go from low G (below the staff) to high E (top space on the staff), and he is working on the Super Mario theme with some octave-alteration for the notes out of his range. He asks to practice almost every day. I love to help him, but I haven't played in over 20 years and, even then, trumpet wasn't my main instrument. I just picked it up for jazz band. His tone can be good but not always, and I've been trying to help him with it but, like I said, it's been over 20 years since I taught myself to play. Mostly what I tell him is to push the air through the trumpet and to keep doing that through the note to avoid going flat at the end. I would love to get him a real teacher, but my husband does not appreciate music at all and will definitely not pay for it (he's the Ebenezer Scrooge of music).…
