Investigators said zinc phosphide is highly toxic and commonly used as a rodenticide to control rats in residential and agricultural areas.

“No remnants were found in the house apart from a rat repellent that we had found at their second floor residence on day one. We checked a bottle but it does not contain zinc phosphide but is a herbal concoction,” an officer who was part of the probe said.

An official said that the skin of a watermelon is thick and chances of something sprayed from the outside seeping through are not likely.
