Myanmar has been largely sidelined by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations since a 2021 military coup that sparked a civil war.

A statement from the office of Min Aung Hlaing said he had 'commuted the remaining sentence' of the 80-year-old Suu Kyi 'to be served at the designated residence.'

Myanmar's parliament has elected junta chief Min Aung Hlaing as president of the Southeast Asian country. He has effectively led Myanmar since the 2021 coup that ousted the democratic government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

General Min Aung Hlaing has been chosen as the next president by the newly-elected parliament.
