The Meteorological Agency is urging residents, particularly along the Tohoku region's Pacific side, to remain on alert for violent winds from Monday evening through the late night.
While no tsunami alert was issued, the quake comes less than a week after Japan issued a special advisory warning of the increased risk of a megaquake.
